Since its founding in 1921, Sakura Color Products Corp., in Osaka, Japan, has shaped creative expression through technical stationery breakthroughs such as Cray-pas oil pastels and Coupy-Pencil colored leads. In 2017, the manufacturer launched SAKURA craft_lab, an experimental design division dedicated to creating adult writing instruments that rekindle childhood creative instincts through vintage aesthetics, precision metalworking, and pigmented gel inks.
Expanding on a lineage known for raw machined brass, textured aluminum, and rugged finishes, Sakura has debuted its first wood-focused platform: the SAKURA craft_lab 011. The series pairs solid forward-weighted brass sections with natural hardwoods, introducing organic warmth and individual grain patterns to the brand's mechanical architecture.

Mechanical Architecture and Handfeel
The construction centers on a front brass nose and grip paired with a natural hardwood upper barrel. Machined from solid brass, the front section shifts the pen's roughly 41g total mass forward toward the writing surface, reducing grip fatigue during long writing sessions.

The Sakura craft_lab’s pen mechanism uses a dial at the end of the pen to expose the pen tip to write.
Deploying the writing tip relies on Sakura craft_lab’s signature rotary crown mechanism: an elegant brass dial that twists smoothly to advance the pen tip. The top crown is engraved with Sakura’s historic cherry blossom emblem, serving as an understated homage to the company's century-old heritage. Both the bare brass and raw timber barrels are left uncoated by thick lacquers, allowing them to oxidize, absorb natural oils, and develop unique patinas with daily handling.

From top to bottom: Amboyna Burl, Indian Rosewood, and Walnut
Three Select Natural Hardwoods
Each barrel is turned from one of three select timbers, ensuring no two pens feature identical grain structure or figuring:
Amboyna Burl / Karin (アンボイナ / 花梨): Harvested from Southeast Asian padauk burl formations, Amboyna is prized among lutherie craftspeople and woodturners for its dense, swirled grain. It displays deep amber-red undertones that darken into a rich, lustrous finish over time.
Indian Rosewood (インドローズウッド): A staple tonewood in fine guitar construction and architectural cabinetry, Indian Rosewood offers exceptional structural hardness, dense grain, and deep chocolate-to-violet hues.
Walnut (ウォールナット): Ranked among the "world's three great cabinet timbers," North American black walnut provides a straight, fine grain pattern, balanced elasticity, and a soft, muted brown tone that complements warm brass.

Gel Formulation and Ink Spectrum
The 011 houses Sakura’s 0.5 mm water-based gel refill (R-LGB05A), engineered for clean line definition without bleed-through on fountain-pen-friendly papers. While each pen ships pre-loaded with standard archival Black ink, the model supports Sakura's line of nuanced "color-black" refills:
Stock Ink: Black
Optional Replacement Shades: Pure Deep Black (Shikkoku / 漆黒), Blue Black, Bordeaux Black, Green Black, Brown Black, and Black
The optional Shikkoku (漆黒) refill uses high-density carbon pigments formulated to yield an opaque, jet-black line reminiscent of traditional Japanese lacquerware.
