Taiwanese pen maker Laban has made a name for itself by taking fine writing instruments and giving them the structural presence of high-end jewelry. Its latest flagship, the OCEANA Abalone Skeleton Fountain Pen, takes that philosophy underwater. Scheduled for release in Japan in late October 2026 via overseas design distributor Interact Co., Ltd. (and retailing globally on Laban’s website for $380), the OCEANA is a substantial piece of desk architecture.

The design centers on genuine polished abalone shell. Instead of laying the iridescent shell flat across a standard cylinder, Laban encases the shimmering organic composite underneath an intricate metal skeleton framework inspired by oceanic currents. Because natural abalone shifts between emerald greens, deep blues, and violet depending on how light hits the barrel, no two pens look identical. It’s dramatic, tactile, and bold.

Substantial Weight and Large-Format Steel
The OCEANA is not built for minimalists or featherweight purists. Tipping the scales at a hefty 56 grams, the solid metal barrel and threaded section provide significant downward balance without forcing you to press hard on the paper.
Up front, Laban mounts a large stainless steel nib engraved with the brand's emblem, tuned to maintain a consistent ink flow across long writing sessions. The cap screws down securely with a streamlined finial and an integrated pocket clip matching the structural cutout styling of the barrel.
