If you’re a stationery enthusiast hoping to scoop up the latest regional release from Kobe’s premier pen maker, brace yourself: the digital shelves are already bare.

Legendary Kobe pen institution NAGASAWA officially rolled out its newest limited-edition creation today, September 25: the Bitter Chocolate Fountain Pen. Released alongside a matching special-edition bottle of Kobe INK Monogatari “Bitter Chocolate,” the drop was designed to celebrate Kobe’s storied culture of Western confectionery and artisanal chocolate-making.

The problem? At the time of this writing, the pen is completely sold out on the official nagasawa-shop.jp web store.

A Confectionery Masterpiece in Resin and Gold

Built on a classic Sailor Pro Gear Slim silhouette, the Bitter Chocolate edition trades standard black-and-gold styling for an indulgent, bittersweet aesthetic.

The pen's nib is handcrafted in Japan using high-quality stainless steel and a 14k pink gold finish

The body is turned from deep dark-chocolate-brown resin, paired with warm pink-gold-plated metal trim. Up top, the pen cap features an exclusive gold-embossed cacao pod motif rather than NAGASAWA's standard weathercock logo. Under the threaded cap, the pen carries a stainless steel nib finished with 14-karat pink gold, laser-etched with NAGASAWA’s signature weathercock and 1882 founding mark.

The pen also comes packaged with a dedicated 50ml bottle of Kobe INK Monogatari in "Bitter Chocolate"—a rich, espresso-tinged sepia ink formulated to mimic melted high-percentage cacao on the page.

The Instant Sellout

Specialty Japanese fountain pen collaborations regularly trigger fierce competition among international collectors, but NAGASAWA’s limited runs are notorious for disappearing in minutes. For those who missed today's initial online drop, keeping a sharp eye on local Kobe brick-and-mortar stockists or secondary market listings is likely the only route left to secure a taste.
